AJ: Having just written the Men’s Preview, we now offer you our preview of both Division 1 and Division 2 University Women’s Indoor Nationals (UWIN). Div 2 will be held in Coventry, but Div 1 UWIN will be held in Nottingham at the same venue as the Division 1 Men!

Dan: I’m excited to watch the Scottish teams go out and compete at the top level of the UK circuit, and I’m confident some of them will be in medal contention. I do wish, however, we could also play on rubbercrumb like those going to Coventry.

AJ: So jealous. But before we offer our predictions, we have to set the stage by recapping Women’s Indoor Regionals from last December, which we had the honor of TD’ing.

Dan: “We”? What exactly did you contribute, AJ?

UWIR Recap

Biggest Surprise Team: Glasgow 2 (5th, Div 2)

Dan: To be honest, the tournament went about as we expected for the top teams, with the top four finishing in the same order we predicted. However, we did get the order of the 2s teams completely wrong, as AJ convinced Lauren and I to predict Glasgow 2 to finish in 8th behind Edi 2, Saints 2, and Dundee 1.

AJ: Yeah, this one was on me. In hindsight, I should have respected Flung 2s strong result at G1D and performance at Women’s outdoor BUCS days. Like the best 2s teams, I think they really succeeded by trusting their systems and playing within their roles, allowing their handlers to create with some pinpoint blades and slowing opponents down with good ol’ hard match D.

Dan: Do you think you’ve repented by playing with some of these women at CXIQ, AJ?

AJ: Listen, I had a great time on the Flung 2s. I was really impressed by just how strong the Flung women’s fundamentals and understanding of the weave is. That being said, they definitely somehow hate me more now.

Honorable Mentions: Saints 3, Stirling 1

Game of the Tournament: Edi 1 v Glasgow 1 (7-5, Finals)

Edinburgh 1

AJ: The Game of the Tournament was always going to be the long-awaited showdown between Edi 1 and Glasgow 1. In the end, the demands of playing all weekend with only 7 seemed to get to Flung, especially as Edi brought in a post-grad or two to bolster their already deep squad on Sunday.

Dan: The quality displayed in this game was just next level, and it did not disappoint for a final. Secretly hoping we get to see this matchup again in Nottingham for another tightly contested game.

AJ: This’ll be the final again next year, book it.

Hon. Mentions: Saints 1 v Stirling 1 (9-8, Game to Go to Div 1 Nats), Saints 3 v Edi 3 (2-1, 9th Place Game)

Breakout Player: Terri Phua (Stirling 1)

AJ: While you could argue that her captain and newly minted GB u20 player Milly Quigley was more valuable, Terri’s ability to consistently break the mark and get flow going was essential to a Stirling offense that seemed predicated on inside-break backhands to the iso.

Dan: And the women’s captains we’ve spoken to completely agreed, with everyone universally impressed with her play. Other breakout players mentioned included Faith Amifor and Grace Robinson, who both excelled in their endzone play and defense at regionals.

AJ: Faith = #GUXYZTeammateoftheYear.

Hon. Mentions: Faith Amifor (Glasgow 1), Grace Robinson (Edi 1)

MVP of the Tournament: Naomi Bond (Edi 1)

AJ: To be honest, this decision wasn’t particularly difficult for us; the only other people in serious consideration were the TDs. I don’t have too much to say about Naomi’s performance; she just kept the momentum from Mixed Regionals. I fear the women’s division might be welcoming a new dynasty for the next three years.

Dan: It’s always cool to have a first year come into the uni scene and just look so comfortable in their first UWIR. I don’t doubt that Naomi will continue to have a big impact on Edinburgh and their place within Scottish Ultimate for the rest of her university time.

AJ: True, though I’m sure our honorable mentions will have something to say about that moving forward. Turns out Chaz is better at playing than predicting.

Hon. Mentions: Charlotte McFadzean (Glasgow 1), Milly Quigley (Stirling 1)

AJ and Dan’s Team of the Tournament:

  1. Ailsa Cameron (Glasgow 1)
  2. Alice Bates (Glasgow 1)
  3. Charlotte McFadzean (Glasgow 1)
  4. Naomi Bond (Edinburgh 1)
  5. Sophie Wilson (Edinburgh 1)

Hon. Mentions: Adreena Ann (Edi 1), Amy Flynn (Saints 1), Maggie Barlow (Saints 1), Milly Quigley (Stirling 1), Keisha Bedor (Edi 1), Navya Bhamidipati (Edi 1), Olivia Kwan (Saints 1), Terri Phua (Stirling 1)

UWIN Predictions

Div 1

AJ: I know this is a controversial decision, but we’ve decided to flip Flung and Edi in our Nationals predictions. With Edi losing recruits Adreena and Tilly Mason this weekend and Flung increasing their squad size from 7 to 8, we predict Flung to finish just outside the medals with Edi finishing just behind them.

Dan: This might be a mistake, but I’m trusting your intel again, AJ. As for the third team going to Nottingham, I think Saints 1 will have a strong weekend overall, but might need some time to adjust to the intensity and quality at Div 1 Nationals. Unfortunately, the nature of the schedule means that there is little time for adjustment and warmup without consequences for the weekend. They will do well on Sunday to claim a decent final ranking.

Flung (4th)
Edi (5th)
Saints (13th)

Winner Prediction: Cambridge 1

Div 2

AJ: Stirling heads to Nationals as easily the strongest Scottish representative and a true contender to take the crown and add another bid for the region. Their second game against Saints 1 showed clear improvement from the first, and if they’re just as willing to bid on hardcourt, I think English teams will struggle to contain their hustle and energy.

Dan: This Saints 2s team is full of exciting newer talent that will have a lot of improvement this weekend. All first nationals are tough, however, and so we predict them to finish in the middle of the pack in 10th, a very respectable place for a 2s team.

AJ: Meanwhile, I’ve heard whispers that Glasgow’s ‘Fast Track to Nationals’ program has actually been a roaring success, so we’re going to tentatively place them in 7th. Maybe Strath should try a ‘Fast Track to UWIR’ next year.

Stirling 1 (2nd)
Flung 2 (7th)
St Andrews 2 (10th)
Edinburgh 2 (12th)

Winner Prediction: Durham 1
