Scottish University Mixed Indoor Regionals: 2025 Preview
By AJ Strang, Daniel Lindsay and Charlotte Mcfadzean
AJ: With Kb retiring from University coverage to pursue a career in Glaswegian bus procurement, Scottish University Frisbee will finally be represented fairly by two unbiased reporters from outside the Flungsphere.
Daniel Lindsay started playing frisbee in his first year at St Andrews and quickly rose up the ranks. Now a fourth year, Dan captained Saints for two years and now serves as one of the Open Training Coordinators, which means he’s basically our coach because we’re broke. A two-time Indoor Regional Champion with Saints, Dan is also an established member of Alba, the Scottish Super League, and the Chewbacca impressions club.
Dan: AJ Strang also started playing frisbee in our first year at St Andrews but rose up the ranks less quickly, honing his tactical travel calls on the Indoor 4s and Outdoor 3s. Now a fourth year, AJ played for GUXYZ and Alba Young Bucks last club season and is captaining Saints this year. He has yet to earn a medal other than Rookie Rumble gold, but his teammaking prowess and knowledge of everything off the pitch in Scottish uni ultimate inspire awe, fear, and concern that he has no other hobbies.
AJ: Cheers, Dan. Up first, we have Scottish University Mixed Indoor Regionals (ScUXIR) in Dundee on November 1-2. What happened last year?
Dan: Alright, first of all, a little self-praise and vindication. Despite being predicted to finish 3rd and miss Division 1 Nationals, Saints 1s overcame a loss to Edinburgh on Saturday to storm through the bracket and claim their 4th mixed title and Div 1 bid in as many years, with little opposition outside of that one anomalous game. Heriot-Watt caused the biggest upset of the tournament, however, as they knocked out favourites, Edinburgh, in quarters and went on all the way to the final. There, they finally ran out of steam, first losing to Saints then suffering the unfortunate fate of losing the ‘Game-to-go’ to Div 1 to Strathclyde, who claimed the second spot in the top tier of UK Uni Ultimate. Stirling and Edinburgh joined Watt as the group of Scottish teams going down to Hull in Div 2.
AJ: But the Scottish uni landscape has changed. The women’s core that enabled Saints’ dominance have graduated, Ronan Kelly and Jonny Evans no longer haunt our dreams, and a huge influx of talent has arrived. Edi Women’s 1s, Strath Open’s 1s, and Glasgow Women’s 1s left strong impressions at Glasgow 1 Day (G1D) this year, but the rumor mill is swirling that some strong FMPs will not make the journey up the M9. Dan, this tournament is no fait accompli.
Dan: I don’t know what that means AJ and I also don’t want to know how you get your intel, but to make sure we don’t have too much of a Saints coloring on our coverage, we have decided to invite a guest predictor to contribute to our discussions of regional tournaments. For ScUXIR, we have granted this unparalleled honor to Glasgow’s Women’s Captain and FUBAR specialist, Charlotte Mcfadzean.
Charlotte: Thank you, guys. Not sure about the FUBAR specialist title, but nonetheless it’s an honor to be here. With 14 teams entered but only two spots available for Division 1 Nationals and three for Div 2, someone’s not going home happy. Let’s get into the predictions.
- St Andrews 1s
AJ: The graduations of Sophie Chowgule and Matthew Miller hurt, but Saints remain the team to beat. Even with the loss of seven of the ten players from last ScUXIR, you can argue this MMP group is just as strong. The greater concern is whether the FMPs can keep up with the strengthening competition as they are forced to change their playstyle. The results at G1D would suggest they haven’t gotten there yet, but the inside scoop from East Fife is that the film is being analyzed as we speak.
Charlotte: The Scottish uni ultimate landscape has been dominated by St Andrews for years, and the clean sweep at Regionals last year makes them the ones to beat…just about. The strength of the MMP side is scary from Saints, and I don’t see any other MMP side which gets close. The squad they picked has height, athleticism, and no AJ to throw blades straight into the ground. Although this unquestionably leaves Saints in a great position to push for gold, their women’s side has changed dramatically and have proven fallible for the first time in years, losing twice to Edi 1 at G1D. Saints Women has talent but may struggle as a few of their key players, such as GUX’s Olivia Kwan and fresher Amy Flynn, are still relatively new to indoor ultimate. If there’s one thing I know about Saints Ultimate though, it’s that they take themselves (too) seriously, so I’m sure they’ve been training every day to make sure they retain their titles. Because what else is there to do in St Andrews?
Dan: First of all, thanks UKU for giving us 2nd seed after getting a bronze medal at nationals and winning ScUXIR 4 years in a row; nothing fuels us more than disrespect. Like AJ said, Saints are still the favourites in my eyes. That core of experience remains present whilst the introduction of players, some of whom are new to Scottish Uni Ultimate, is sure to bring some excitement and novelty.

- Glasgow 1s
Charlotte: Glasgow are going to win. And I know what you’re thinking – you’ve got to say that – but I genuinely believe it. This is not a new group, with many of us starting our ultimate careers together. For example, the humble beginnings for GUX’s Michael Black, GUXYZ’s Kabir Adkoli, and myself were together on the Mixed 3s back in 2023. In the build-up to ScUXIR, there’s been strong focus on the FMP side, with continued development of the women over summer in the club scene leading to an impressive winning performance at G1D – plus, the return of GB U24 Bronze medalist Ailsa Cameron. The MMP side of Flung should also not be underestimated, with high athleticism, strong disc skills, and questionable spirit.
Dan: I think Glasgow will definitely be a contender this year, but I’m not sure I can agree and place them first. As much as the team might have plenty of experience playing together, they have not done so in high pressure games against this level of opposition. The struggles of last year’s Regionals means that few players have played in a mixed semi or final.
AJ: Their women did run through G1D a couple weeks ago, but the loss of GUX’s Alice Bates as an endzone terror will sting. I’ll be honest, my trepidation also comes down to their inexperience and mental game. I’ve witnessed firsthand several Michael, Kb, Siobhan, and Charlotte crashouts, and I’m not quite sure how valuable that Mixed 3s experience will be in pressure situations, Charlotte.
Charlotte: Last year was a rebuilding year, guys. No nationals appearance was all part of the 2025/26 super team development plan. Trust me.

- Strathclyde 1s
Dan: Last year marked a fabulous return to the mixed scene for Strath, as they carried their momentum from Regionals to finish in the top 10 at Div 1 Nationals. This year, teams will be more ready and aware of their strengths, so I’m not sure they will be able to repeat the run to Div 1 with the strengthening of other unis.
AJ: I have this down as the second best MMP group in the division after their G1D performance. My only question is who are the FMPs? My sources say Team GB D-line cutter, Scottish Four Nations Captain, and love of my life Becca Hardman Carter will not be attending, but she may potentially be replaced by a Four Nations teammate. If so, this group has enough juice to make a real run for the top spot, even if they only have enough women to send one mixed team.
Charlotte: Strathclyde are my dark horses to make Div 1 (see what I did there). On the MMP side, the focus will be on GB U20 Captain Angus Bain, but other key players such as GUXYZ’s Taylor Sweden and Chris Boyle make this roster incredibly strong. AJ’s questions about the depth of the FMP side are valid, with no representation in the women’s division at G1D. Still, Strath’s Women’s captain and our former XYZ teammate Lauren Wright was impressive in the endzone for GUW at G1D, and like AJ, I have also heard whispers that there may be a surprise appearance from a GUX star on Sunday. I predict the second day boost will give Strath the edge in the 3v4 game, where they will take down Edi for the bronze medal. And it also wouldn’t surprise me if they win the 2v3 game-to-go to Div 1 again.

- Edinburgh 1s
Dan: Edinburgh will most definitely be one of the main challengers for those two Div 1 spots. Despite a lot of turnover from last year’s team, particularly for the MMPs, the new talent will bring a fresh energy to a team that should never be underestimated. Additionally, the return of Xander Froggatt should offer some valuable experience and reliable offence.
AJ: This women’s group terrifies me. The depth was always there, but introducing GB U24 player Naomi Bond to pair with fellow World’s bronze medalist Sophie Wilson just raises the ceiling. I think this group will figure out ways to win, and I trust them in big spots. I would not be surprised at all to see them in the final.
Charlotte: You’re terrified of any group of women, AJ. I think Edi will be good, but I do not believe they have the squad depth to compete against Saints and Flung.
AJ: I don’t know, Charlotte. I’m still recovering from getting cooked by each and every one of their experienced women at Edi Beginners.
Charlotte: I’m just not convinced their MMPs will be able to keep up with the top players in Scotland. I do agree though that teams will struggle to contain the aforementioned Naomi and Sophie combo.

- St Andrews 2
Dan: Our prediction for the top 2s team will (of course) be Saints 2. I promise we’re not biased… This team includes so much talent in many different forms which should not be underestimated. The disc skills and ability to make big plays will allow for them to cause upsets that others might not expect.
Charlotte: Saints 2 have big talents, with both Open captains and talented fresher “King” Julien Sommers being welcome additions to the squad. I think their men will impress, and if this was UMIR, I could see them upsetting some 1s teams. However, I think the women might struggle to keep up with the pace and intensity of teams like Stirling which could be their downfall. I predict them to be the highest placed second team, although I’m not sure they will beat as many first teams as Dan and AJ believe.
AJ: I’m backing my squad to make Nats. No notes, letting our play do the talking.
- Stirling 1s
Dan: Although the core of this team is very solid, the loss of GB U24’s Ronan Kelly and what he offered indoors will surely be felt in big games. I’m afraid this will lead to the team narrowly missing out on a nationals spot.
Charlotte: Stirling will miss out on nationals, and I could see them placing lower than 6th. This will be a rebuilding year for Stirling. The core is strong with club representation from Will Harrison (GUX), Milly Quigley (GUXYZ), Joia Henderson (GUXYZ), and Haya El Ghossein (Ultimate Junkies), but I am not sure they’ll be able to handle the depth of MMPs or the star FMPs on other unis. Finishing 9th out of 11 in the women’s division and 15th out of 20 in the open division at G1D leave serious questions. I could see second teams giving them a run for their money, and I predict Glasgow 2s and Saints 2s pip Stirling for 5th and 6th place.
AJ: Poor Will, all his favorite targets are gone. The Stirling FMPs looked strong individually at G1D and should have good chemistry given the number of returning players, but their loss to Edi 2 does have me concerned.

- Heriot-Watt 1s
Dan: As I mentioned earlier, Watt made a crazy run to the final at last year’s Regionals. It’s important to remember the role that Heck’s João Lopes played on that underdog team, and his presence will surely be missed. It was very encouraging, on the other hand, to see their beginners team perform well at both Edi Beginners and G1D, a good sign for the future.
Charlotte: Heriot-Watt are the real question marks of Scottish Uni Ultimate for me. Impressive performances last year led them to a Nationals spot, but after a disappointing 17th place at G1D for the open side and no representation in the women’s division, I see Watt bowing out in the quarterfinals. But, as we have seen in previous years, they always seem to find a way to prove pundits wrong.
AJ: They only practice in the Oriam, so surely they have to be good at this. Also, who on a 2s or 3s team is stopping Heck’s speed-demon, Logan Norris-Lambe?

- Edinburgh 2s
AJ: I don’t really know who’s going to be on which Edi team to be honest because they keep deleting their Instagram posts, but I don’t think it matters because the FMP depth is unreal. I may be in the minority on this panel, but I back Edi 2s to take down some 1s teams currently predicted ahead of them.
Charlotte: I think this is where you and I might disagree the most, AJ. I acknowledge that the women of Edi will be strong and have been impressive thus far. But this is mixed, and if I’m being honest, I don’t recognize many of the names on the Open Performance squad, and the open team didn’t perform particularly well at G1D, placing below Flung and Strath. I see Glasgow 2s and Saints 2s finishing above Edi 2s, as I think the FMPs will be of a similar standard, while the MMPs will give the edge. Also, Ro Sham: if you’re going to delete Insta posts, please get rid of the performance squad announcements, they’re so cringe.
Dan: I agree with all that’s been said, though maybe a little less rage baited by @ediuniultimate. If their Women’s 2s can take down the Stirling 1s at G1D, I don’t see why they can’t rely on a mix of 1s and 2s women to take care of Dundee, Glasgow 2, and the 3s teams. I am, however, aware of how difficult it can be for 2s teams to beat first teams, even when the quality is similar. Therefore, I don’t see this team finishing any higher than 7th or 8th.
- Glasgow 2s
AJ: The Flung women vs the Ro Sham women will be one to watch across all three of their mixed squads. On the MMP side, I know fresher Hongzhei Mei can beam it, but the indoor pitch just isn’t big enough for that to be an efficient offensive strategy like it was at Stirling Tune-up.
Charlotte: I am super excited about this team, and I think top 8 is 100% on the cards. While many of them are freshers with limited indoor experience, I believe this team will shock people. They have talent, great vibes, and a desire to win. Would it be delusional to think they might have a chance at that 5th spot?
Dan: Yes, yes it would. We know at the very least that Saints graduate Euan “BBL Drizzy” Lau will throw a game to help his old buddies out.
- Dundee 1s
AJ: As the only university not to send a representative to SaintsScrims, I’m afraid Dundee represents a blindspot for me. But they are Saints’ sworn opps, so my hot take is that at least one 3s team upsets them.
Charlotte: Dundee are an interesting team. They sent both a beginners team and an open team to G1D but finished last in both divisions. Now, I don’t think Dundee will take Regionals by storm, but I do disagree with AJ that 3s teams will beat them. Who knows, they are relatively unknown with no players in the Scottish club scene, so they could easily prove us all wrong.
Dan: Homecourt advantage can never be overlooked, and I’ve also noticed the big numbers coming out for Dundee at tournaments like Tune-up. This team will likely be fighting for some of the lower spots at this competition, but don’t count them out of creating an upset!

- Edinburgh 3s
Charlotte: I am sure the FMP side will be strong. The Women’s 2s impressed me at G1D, coming away with victories against Stirling 1s and Glasgow 2s. The MMP players are again unknown, but it feels like strong FMPs might be the key to success at UXIR this year.
AJ: I think this might be too low; I reckon they’ll make the top 10. I just trust these FMPs and the magic of Matt Miller’s coaching.
Dan: If this team has learnt anything from Matt, we’ll all need to have our feet ready to block a barrage of low release backhands. The battles for these spots at the bottom can lead to some absolute cinema, so I struggle to predict where the three 3s teams will land.
- St Andrews 3
AJ: Dan and I will have ingrained our systems in them by Regionals, but I fear their inexperience with playing high-level mixed will show. I hope I’m wrong.
Dan: No one is ever prepared for the shenanigans that come out of Saints 3. Whether it’s an unorthodox pull play or a hallucinated spirit call, the depth and quality of these players is higher than you might expect. They might not be fighting for nationals, but you never know what sort of performances they could pull out of nowhere.
Charlotte: They’ll be fine.
AJ: Thanks, Chazzy. Brilliant analysis from you as always.
- Glasgow 3s
Charlotte: This team will be fun. It mixes athletic and competitive freshers who could really impress but just haven’t had the reps to push into the 2s, with some veterans who will be able to build confidence in the team over the weekend. I hope they can finish as the best third team in Scotland and upset a couple of second teams while they’re at it.
AJ: I have no doubt Charlotte has stashed some Glasgow School of Art and exchange students on the 3s. I’d rank them higher based on audacity alone, but I don’t think they’ll have the indoor knowledge to keep up.
Dan: Like I said earlier, these positions are always up in the air, but the title of best 3s team is a venerated one, and trust me (done it in 2022), there is no better feeling than outperforming your 2s team. Hoping for this sort of drama this weekend…
- Dundee 2
Charlotte: I was surprised to see Dundee had the numbers for two teams, but it’s great to see people getting a chance to play competitively. I assume this will be a mostly beginners group, and I hope they can pick up a win or two over the weekend.
AJ: Thrilled to see a second Dundee team, but considering their beginners didn’t win a game in the G1D round robin, I can’t see them being competitive against teams with seasoned veterans.
Dan: Awesome for Scottish Ultimate and Dundee in particular to have 2 teams. While I also find it difficult to predict them winning too many games this weekend, hopefully it’s a good experience overall for them!
Dan and AJ’s Predictions:
- Saints 1
- Glasgow 1
- Strathclyde 1
- Edinburgh 1
- St Andrews 2
- Stirling 1
- Heriot-Watt 1
- Edinburgh 2
- Glasgow 2
- Dundee 1
- Edi 3
- Saints 3
- Glasgow 3
- Dundee 2
AJ: Any closing thoughts from the panel? I think there’s a pretty clear top 4 with a close battle for the two Div 1 spots and a lot of teams in contention for the final Div 2 Nats bid. Anyone ranked too high or too low, Charlotte?
Charlotte: I agree on the top 4, just not the order: Flung over Saints in the final. The last Div 2 Nationals bid is going to be a dog fight, though. I can see 4 key contenders: Stirling 1s, Heriot-Watt 1s, Saints 2s, and Glasgow 2s. I feel confident in my Flung team, but I unfortunately think Saints 2s might qualify. I have also potentially been too harsh on the Stirling team, so I am sure they’ll be out to prove me wrong. It’s either Saints 2s or Stirling 1s for me. Dan, who do you back to claim this spot?
Dan: If I learnt anything from last year, it’s that anything can happen at ScUXIR. Who knows who might make a shock run to Nationals? Heriot-Watt? Stirling? Dundee? I think it’s fairly up in the air, but if I had to pick one, I’d have to stay true to my allegiances and go for Saints 2.
AJ: Love to see the confidence in our 2s. Before he abandoned us, Kb created a prediction tool, so that you, the reader, can compare your choices with us, each other, and the actual results. Please insert your predictions here to see if you really have that ball knowledge.
Dan: We will see you with our predictions for UMIR next week. Thanks for joining us, Charlotte.
Charlotte: Thanks for having me, guys. I hope we’ve provided some useful insight before ScUXIR and haven’t offended too many people. See you all Saturday!
