University Mixed Indoor Regionals 2024: Review
by Kabir ‘Kb’ Adkoli
University Mixed Indoor Regionals took place this past weekend and there couldn’t have been more excitement over the two days. With so many teams hungry for nationals qualification, it was bound to lead to some highly contested results. Without further ado, here’s a recap of the action.
Group A: Edinburgh 1, Strathclyde 1, Stirling 2 and Dundee 1
Both Edinburgh and Strathclyde entered the tournament with big ambitions, making it no surprise that they took the top spots in Group A, comfortably beating Stirling 2 and Dundee 1 along the way. In the clash to top the group, Strathclyde took control, edging Edinburgh by a point to take the top spot (6-5). Dundee 1 beat Stirling 2 (9-4) to take the third spot.
Group B: Glasgow 1, Stirling 1, Edinburgh 3 and Dundee 2
Glasgow 1 came out firing on all cylinders, managing to bagel both Edinburgh 3 and Dundee 2. Stirling put up stellar results as well by scoring 12 against Dundee without response and dispatching Edinburgh 3, 10-4. Edinburgh then heaped more misery on Dundee 2 by winning 12-2. In the fight for the top spot, Glasgow threw away a 6-4 lead to Stirling, who secured the win 12-9.
Group C: St Andrews 1, Glasgow 2, Aberdeen 1 and Edinburgh 4
It was no surprise that defending champions St Andrews 1 conquered this group, bagelling Edinburgh 4 and winning convincingly against Aberdeen 1 and Glasgow 2. Aberdeen took second place with an 8-4 win against Glasgow and a bagel of their own against Edinburgh. Unfortunately, Edinburgh 4 was also no match for Glasgow 2, as the latter enjoyed a comfortable 11-1 win.
Group D: Heriot-Watt 1, St Andrews 2 and Edinburgh 2
In this evenly matched group, Heriot-Watt held their top seed with 6-4 and 7-4 wins against Edinburgh and St Andrews, respectively. The two second teams in the pool pushed each other hard in an encounter that resulted in a 4-4 stalemate.
Power Pools
Pool E: Strathclyde 1, St Andrews 1, Aberdeen 1 and Edinburgh 1
With teams in this pool having the potential to win the tournament, there was bound to be some thrilling clashes. Aberdeen were the unfortunate team in the group, losing both games. The magic of Scottish ultimate was on full display, with St Andrews dominating Strathclyde 11-3, demonstrating their undeniable strength. Edinburgh powered through in their game against Saints to win 9-7, however Saints still took the top spot in the group going into Sunday, thanks to point difference.
Pool F: Stirling 1, Heriot-Watt 1, Edinburgh 2 and Glasgow 1
Both Stirling and Glasgow carried their momentum from Pool B and came away with wins. A highlight of the Heriot v Glasgow game came when Heriot open captain, Logan Norris-Lambe, threw a successful ‘greatest’ from the midfield sideline, caught by his teammate just outside the endzone. After the games on Saturday, this power pool ended with Stirling in first place followed by Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh.
In the bottom two power pools which included teams finishing 9th to 15th, we had Group G and H. Group G finished with Glasgow 2, Dundee 1, Stirling 2 and Edinburgh 4. Group H concluded with Edinburgh 3, St Andrews 2 and Dundee 2.
Sunday Brackets
St Andrews faced minimal opposition in the 1 v 8 against Edinburgh 2, as they strolled to a 9-1 win. In the 2 v 7, Stirling had a closer game as they scraped through with an 8-5 win against Aberdeen. Glasgow fell to Strathclyde (6-4) in a tightly contested Glasgow derby, booking Strathclyde’s place in the semi-final. The big upset of the day was delivered by Heriot-Watt, who, despite back-to-back defeats in the power pools, stunned title contenders Edinburgh 1 in the 3 v 6 game, winning 5-4.
The final spot for division 2 nationals came down to a Glasgow 1 v Edinburgh 1 showdown, with Edinburgh earning that spot after a strong performance (9-1).
Heriot-Watt continued to create magic in the form of another universe-point win (8-7) and redeemed themselves against Stirling. When asked what changed for them from Saturday to Sunday, Heriot-Watt replied with simply, “We threw a zone at them, and it worked”. They were joined in the final by St Andrews, who gained their own spot following another win (8-3) against Strathclyde. The reigning champions kept their crown for another year as they ended the weekend with a strong 8-1 win against Heriot. Heriot’s zone didn’t quite come together in the 2 v 3 game against Strathclyde; the latter team won both the game (8-4), and the final spot to division 1 nationals.

There were quite a few comments about my predictions section of the preview which I greatly appreciate, as people seem to love reading The Release Point! So, here’s what I got right: Strathclyde coming in second was a bit controversial given their history of underperforming in mixed ultimate, but ended up to come true, as was Edinburgh 2 being the best second team. Finally, Aberdeen lived up to their billing as the wildcard team as they improved from last year to take 7th.
The rest of the predictions were evidence that my “zero ball-knowledge” from football and basketball do indeed carry over to ultimate. My first apology would be to St Andrews as I underestimated their quality to retain their title as Scotland’s best mixed team for another year. A much bigger apology goes out to Heriot-Watt who I said would “fall from their impressive fourth place finish last year” which obviously did not happen. While they did get hit by graduations, the current crop of players stepped up and proved to be even better than last year as the team, although finishing third, had the opportunity to dethrone Saints as they pulled off two massive upsets on Sunday, performing when the lights shined brightest.

Congratulations to everyone who played this weekend and thank you for reading! Stay tuned for more!
