One of the most exciting tournaments in the ultimate calendar is almost upon us: the World Ultimate Championships (WUC) 2024! WUC is taking place in Australia’s Gold Coast, from 31st August until 7th September with 16 nations competing in the open division, 12 in women’s and 21 in mixed.

Over here at The Release Point, if you’ve not caught on by now, we’re all about highlighting Scottish talent. So, we thought it would be nice to catch up with the Scots repping Great Britain at WUC. We also like to be a bit loose with our definition of ‘Scottish’. In this case, we mean those athletes who learned how to play ultimate whilst in Scotland.

As far as we’re aware, the eligible athletes are: Camy Agnew, Andrew Dick, Ruth Tayler and Ellie Taylor in the mixed squad, Joel Terry and Andrew Warnock playing open, and Hayley Dalmon in the women’s team. Each of these players demonstrate that hard work pays off, and it’s possible to be one of the best if you want to be. We’d also like to give a special mention to Strathclyde alumnus Gemma Henry and Alba squad member, David Steedman, who are on the GBW and GBX training squads, respectively, for this cycle.

Over the next week or so, in the run up to the tournament, we’ll be releasing interviews with each of the main squad members (at the time of publishing, some of the athletes haven’t responded to us…but fingers crossed they do). The players speak about their ultimate journeys so far, favourite team experiences, main influences, and what they’re planning for the future, amongst other things. Shout out to Jimmy Dimitrov, Audrey Melançon-Fournier and Phil Webb for helping make this happen. And of course, to the players themselves!

All of the aforementioned players (bar the training players) took part in the GB cycle last year, where they competed at the European Ultimate Championships (EUC) in Limerick. GB open and women became silver medalists, while the mixed team placed 4th. If you’re looking for a new sporting fix now the Olympics are over, you can watch footage from the whole 2023 senior GB cycle on YouTube, thanks to ulti.tv, here!

For more information about the upcoming WUC, check out the tournament website. The tournament schedule has been posted here. It’s likely to be your best bet at keeping up to date with tournament happenings, as whilst there will be streaming provided by Ultiworld, you’re gonna have to pay. You can buy an event pack here. As usual, there’s likely to be a free stream here and there, so keep an eye out. You can also follow each of the teams on Instagram: Mixed, Women and Open.

We’re wishing a huge good luck to all players heading Down Under. If the ultimate doesn’t work out, you could always change sport and catch a few waves whilst you’re there?

First up in this series is…Andrew Dick! Stay tuned!
